On October 8th~10th, a gagaku performance was held in North Macedonia. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and North Macedonia. This article was made by the Japan Macedonia Society (JMS) based on the information received from <\/em><\/span>ENSOPHIA Corporation (former Silkroad Japan) which made the performance. It was wonderful performance as a commemorative project. It comes through the charm of gagaku, the beautiful scenery of Ohrid, and the history of North Macedonia.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In Ohrid, a dedication performance was held at St. Naum Church as a memorial to the sculptor Ryota Ojika, who passed away suddenly in 2021 while building a bridge of friendship between Japan and North Macedonia.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em><\/span>Lake Ohrid, located on the border of North Macedonia and Albania, is the oldest lake in Europe, formed about 5 million years ago. Ohrid, a city that flourished as an ancient city, is said to have once had more than 360 churches, is a holy place called Jerusalem of the Balkans, and is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site consisting of both natural and cultural heritage. At the foot of Mount Korab, Macedonia’s highest peak, with an endless horizon under a clear blue autumn sky, a performance of gagaku classical music was performed in front of St. Naum Church. Lake Ohrid\u00a0 in the background, the dance was performed \u00a0with the music of “Sakura Sakura” and “Biljana platno bele\u0161e was washing cloth”, typical traditional music of each country .\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em><\/span>In the endless clear blue sky, Lake Ohrid, and the sacred atmosphere of the Church of St. Naum, it was a wonderful performance while being watched by Pastor Nektariy and many other tourists who were present.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/strong><\/em><\/span>In addition, the sculptor Ryota Ojika, who was connected to the Japan Macedonia Friendship Association in 2019 and passed away suddenly in 2021, once lived near Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia.\u00a0 We felt moved by the performance because we received the baton of friendship made by Mr.Ojika built with Pastor Nektariy of St. Naum Church and the local people and we finally fulfilled our promise to Mr. Ojika after five years. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Ms. Norika, a staff member of the Embassy of Japan in North Macedonia, who has been instrumental in connecting us with the Church.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Skopje University is located in the center of Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia.<\/span>The lecture began with a speech by President Darija Andovska, followed by a classical performance, a lecture on the origins of gagaku, an introduction to musical instruments, and a costume experience. Together with about 100 students and university officials, we sang gagaku songs. The second half began with the ceremony of the Imperial Kagura and the final performance, “The Dance of the Elder Dance,” and began with a collaboration with students from the Folk Music Department. We played representative songs from both countries together. In particular, the most famous “Makedonsko devoj\u010de” (Macedonian Maiden) in North Macedonia, was very exciting with the venue.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the evening of the same day, a concert was held at the National Gallery, also located in the center of Skopje. This is a domed building where you can feel the history of the renovated hammam built during the 15th century Ottoman Turks, and it was held in a unique atmosphere. Due to the structure of the building, the sound resonated wonderfully, and it was an experience that seemed to veil the entire venue. Beginning with a speech by Ambassador Otsuka of the Embassy of Japan in North Macedonia, we\u00a0 performed the singing of\u3000Seki-no-kami, a song that 77th Emperor Go-shirakawa used to like and recently restored restored from the biwa score from about 800 years ago by Professor Nemoto of Kyoto City University, among three secret songs of ima-sama (a popular song of the Heian period). We also played Gagaku classical instruments, performed \u201cNinjyo-mai\u201d dance as well as singing a medley of traditional songs from both countries. After the concert, a reception hosted by the embassy was held in the garden of the museum, where participants enjoyed conversations and exchanges about gagaku and Japan culture in the afterglow of the performance.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
